Storage is a wonderful tool when used well—it helps keep our homes organised, making everyday life easier. The key is ensuring our storage works for us, not against us. At A Hand to Help we often hear “I don’t have enough storage.” More storage is not always the answer. Is your storage working for you positively or negatively?
When storage is set up thoughtfully, it will work for you, making daily life smoother. But when it simply hides excess, it can become part of the clutter problem.
Let’s explore both the positives and negatives and how to make it work best in your home.
Positive
Storage works well when:
- It is holding specific categories. E.g. clothes, laundry, books, games…
- It’s not over full. It will be much easier to find what you want if your storage doesn’t have multilabel layers on a shelf. Great organising is about easy find and easy put away.
- What you are regularly using is within easy access. And the seasonal items are out of the way
Negative
Storage doesn’t work well when:
- It is holding items that are no longer used or needed. This competes with space for items that are needed. It needs an annual or biannual declutter to move on items no longer used.
- It is used as a “drop zone” for quickly clearing up but never coming back to put the items away in their designated homes.
- It is used for delayed decisions, “I’ll deal this that later.” Delayed decisions can fill rooms, sheds and paid storage.
Storage should enhance your daily life, making it easier to find what you need, when you need it. If it isn’t working for you, it could be costing you more than just space—it might be costing you time, money, and peace of mind. Delayed decisions often lead repurchasing items you already own but can’t find, wasted time searching through clutter or paid storage fees.
