Time. It’s the one thing we all share, and yet it often feels like we don’t have enough of it. We often hear “I just need more time!” As if the day could stretch to accommodate our endless to-do lists. But here’s the truth: we can’t manage time— we can only manage what we do within the time we have.

Let’s shift our perspective: Our choices control us, not time

The Myth of Time Management

The phrase time management has been around for decades and it’s misleading. We can’t manage time itself—whether we’re CEOs or students, we all get the same 24 hours in a day. What we can manage are our activities, priorities, and attention.

The key is to use time as a tool, not a tyrant.

  • Start with Priorities
Identify your top 3-5 priorities for the day. Focusing on the most important activities helps you stay on task and productive. Remember, not everything needs to be done today.
  • Time-Box Your Tasks
Use a calendar or a simple notebook to assign when you’ll work on each activity.
    For example:
    Declutter the kitchen: 9–9:30 am
    – Prep for client call: 10–10:30 am
    – Rest and reset: 12–12:30 pm
By “boxing in” tasks, you give them a clear boundary, which helps you focus.
  • Watch Out for Activity Creep
Tasks expand to fill the time you give them. Be mindful of distractions (like social media or unnecessary emails) that can turn a 10-minute task into a 30-minute time drain.
  • Pause, Reflect and Tweak
At the end of the day take time to reflect: Did I spend time on what truly mattered?
If not, no guilt—just tweak and adjust for tomorrow.

A Mindset Shift: Control What You Can

When we realize we can’t control time itself, we free ourselves from frustration.
We shift the focus to what we can control:

  • Our choices
  • Our actions
  • Our priorities

Instead of chasing the impossible (more hours in a day), we can master what’s possible: a clear focus, mindful activity, and simple systems to keep us on track.

🌸 You don’t need to manage time—you just need to manage what fills your time.
🌸 Focus on what matters.
🌸 Take one step at a time.
